Edward V Penny

Edward V Penny at Rare British Coins

King Edward V ruled England for a short time. He was born on 2 November 1470. His father, King Edward IV, died in April 1483. Edward, aged 12, became king but never ruled independently. His uncle, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, became his protector.

Edward and his younger brother, Richard, moved to the Tower. The move was meant for their safety before the coronation. However, they disappeared, and their fate remains uncertain. Most believe they were murdered, possibly by Richard.

Richard took the throne as Richard III in July 1483. Edward V was never officially crowned. Historians call his reign the shortest among English monarchs.

No significant coins were minted during Edward V’s reign. His rule lasted only two months, leaving little time for coinage. However, coins from his father’s reign remained in circulation. These included gold angels, half-angels, and silver groats.

Edward V’s disappearance remains one of England’s greatest mysteries. The “Princes in the Tower” theory suggests foul play. In 1674, workmen found bones in the Tower of London. Many believe these belonged to Edward and his brother.

Historians still debate his fate and Richard III’s involvement. Shakespeare’s play “Richard III” portrayed Richard as the villain. However, some argue that Henry VII had more motive.

Edward V’s brief life left a lasting legacy in history. His tragic story symbolises the dangers of medieval power struggles. The mystery surrounding his death still fascinates historians today.
