A mule coin is a coin that has been minted without a date. It is a kind of error coin, a mis-strike by the mint. One of the most famous recent examples of mules getting into UK coin circulation was the 20p mules which were struck in 2008. According to the Royal Mint, around 250,000 of these were made out of a total circulation of 136 million so while they are relatively rare, they are not incredibly rare. They are still very collectible of course.
